While everyone is preparing for Christmas celebrations, the Philippines is lashed ruthlessly by the tropical storm Washi. It is estimated that over 1,000 people are reported missing or dead, with more than 100,000 people affected.
On the afternoon of December 16, storm Washi landed on the south of the Philippines. Due to flash floods triggered by the tropical storm, many people were killed, especially children and the elderly, as they were trapped in homes while they were asleep or failed to escape from flood waters. All kinds of emergency help are much needed. The worst hit cities, Cagayan de Oro and Iligan, are in chaos with over 20 villages inundated.
World Vision relief teams have mobilised to provide the affected families in Cagayan de Oro City and Iligan City with drinking water, food, hygiene items, blankets, sleeping mats, cooking utensils and other emergency materials. We also plan to distribute school supplies to school children.
World Vision Hong Kong has initially committed HK$400,000 to the relief efforts. | |
